Cosmetic Surgery Costs

Cosmetic Surgery Cost

The costs for cosmetic surgery range from as little as a couple of hundred dollars for botox injections to many thousands of dollars for extensive reconstructive surgery or enhancements.  Besides the type of procedure, who performs the procedure and where in the country it is performed also contributes to the costs.  Compounding the issue is most cosmetic surgeries are considered elective and not covered under any type of health insurance.

Starting at the low end of the price spectrum, dermabrasion  or micordermabrasion can be had for as low as one hundred dollars.  Botox injections are also included in this price range.

Laser procedures to remove tattoos can start at twenty five dollars per square inch with a seventy five dollar per office minimum.  It will usually take several office visits to remove a tattoo, so the cost can vary by the size of the tattoo and the hourly cost of the professional.  So the price range can start at several hundred dollars and goes up from there.

Laser hair removal is another type of cosmetic procedure that can be had at the lower end of the price range.  Depending on where and how extensive the hair removal procedure is, the prices range from a low of several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.  Part of the cost is the necessity of having seven to nine office visits to complete the procedure.  Also where the hair is to be removed will impact the cost.  Above the neckline is costlier than below the neck.

For major surgical procedures, costs include the surgeon’s fee, facility fee, anesthesiologist fee, hospital fee (if overnight stay is required) and implant fee (if part of the procedure).  All fees have a wide range due to the type of and complexity of the procedure, who does the procedure (every surgeon has their own fee schedule) and in what region in the country the procedure is performed (Beverly Hills, California is normally more expensive than Albuquerque, New Mexico).

Per the American Society of Plastic Surgeons the following are the national averages for surgeon/physician fees in 2010.  Please note this is the surgeon/physician average fees only.  Additional fees for facilities, anesthesiologist and other costs are not included.  (Update for 2013 – add at least 10% to 25% to the items listed below for medical inflation.)
